MA Islamic Studies
Posted on: Monday, May 16, 2005
The Graduate School of Islamic and Social Sciences in Ashburn, Virginia is accepting applications for the second year of its new intensive graduate degree in Social Studies: Islamic Studies. The program offers the opportunity for students to complete a 36 credit hour MA degree program in ten months of full-time study, beginning in September of each year. The program is designed for a cohort of students who attend consecutive, accelerated courses.

MASTER OF ARTS IN SOCIAL STUDIES: ISLAMIC STUDIES

The focus of the program is to develop a strong background in Islamic sources and their relationship with social sciences. This background is presented in an environment intended to nurture and develop open-minded, integrated, well-adjusted and morally upright students. The program prepares graduates for a career in community service, education or non-profit organizations. The program is also intended for specialists in social studies who would like to explore the broad possibilities, which an Islamic worldview based upon Quranic principles can illuminate in their respective fields.

Module One: Introduction to Social Sciences

This module consists of 9-credit hours of course work intended to introduce participants to the philosophy and research methods of social sciences and to provide an overview of the early Islamic history.

Module Two: Islamic Sciences

This module constitutes the core requirements of the program. It consists of 18-credit hours of course work to introduce participants to the traditional Islamic Sciences and provide an overview of methodologies to understanding the Quran comprehensively within the context of the tradition of the Prophet and the modern social disciplines.

Module Three: Seminar in Comparative Religion and Civilization

This module consists of a 3-credit hour course intended to introduce participants to paradigms, philosophies and methodologies in the Christian tradition for dealing conceptually with issues introduced in the program.

Module Four: Seminar in Applied Social Studies

This module consists of 6-credit hours (includes 3 credit hour practicum or independent study) to introduce students to case studies of how the philosophies, frameworks, concepts, and methodologies that have been developed throughout the program can be applied to a specialized field of studies. Students are expected to explore and develop their understanding of how the principles and the methodologies that they have learnt in the program can be applied to a field of practice and/or to research.

Tuition waivers, financial aid and a limited number of competitive fellowship stipends are available for the 2005 – 2006 academic year.
